Month: July 2008
Free of The Footwell!
Recently I’ve been improving so much that I’m now allowed to be in the back of the car without having to go in a sky cage.
I can always usually often sometimes occasionally be trusted not to try and bite the car to bits when I see another dog out of the window, or Something Else To Bark At.
Being free I can try and round up all the other dogs in the back.
Rounding Things Up is one of My Favorite Things To Do.
If I get too excited rounding everyone up then being in the back of the car also means I can run right to the very back whenever the Shakey Bottle appears.
This means that Mutley is between the Shakey Bottle and me, which is a Very Good Thing. It also means that I can see out of the back window.
There are always Lots of Things To Bark At out of the back window, but I try and remember not to bark too much as it only upsets the Shakey Bottle.
Helen is used to looking in her mirror and seeing the drivers behind laughing at me, particularly if we are in a traffic jam. I don’t know why they laugh.
Sometimes they almost crash because they are watching me. I’m sure they would not even stop laughing if they crashed.
This last week we’ve been going on adventures to play with Takoda. Takoda is not staying at the Rescue because he’s Just Too Big and has Too Much Energy All The Time. So we go over to take him out for walks during the day. This week it has been so hot that we’ve been spending lots of time jumping in and out of Pools and Ponds to cool off.
I love Pools and Ponds, they always provide lots of opportunities to get messy and discover Smelly Things.
I’d like to be a Smelly Thing, but I’m in enough trouble with Helen as it is.
So I try and encourage all the other dogs to get covered in Smelly Things, and then Round Them Up instead!

Subject: DOLLY FOUND EMACIATED STARVING AND IN NEED OF VET CARE NEEDS YOUR HELP
Please cross post everywhere
WE NEED A MIRACLE
DOLLY NEEDS VET CARE AND A SAFE PLACE TO BE. SHE HAS BEEN STARVED AND IT IS EVIDENT SHE HAS ALREADY HAD PUPPIES AND SHE IS ONLY A BABY HERSELF.
DOLLY WOULD NOT SUIT KENNELS SHE NEEDS SOMEONE WITH BULLBREED EXPERIENCE – A NO EUTHANISE POLICY.
Dolly was found emaciated and starving in Hackney north London on the 8th of July 08.
She has been starved and severely abused by her previous owners.
David took Dolly to his office and gave food and water. He has contacted some rescue organisations. THEY WILL NOT HELP ONLY OFFER PUT TO SLEEP – NOT FAIR WHEN A LIFE HAS NOT EVEN BEEN LIVED AT ALL.
DOLLY IS CONSIDERED TO BE:
1) Too expensive to treat
2) Too hard to re-home
David has claimed responsibility for her and set about getting her better and re-homing her in a suitable place.
Dolly Has Seen a Vet – but seeks financial help or a rescue group that will help.
Dolly weighed only 14kg, she should be around 23-27kg. She is around 18 months old. Dolly is given 3 injections and anti-biotic tablets to be given twice a day along with a special diet to build her weight back up slowly.
David has now made himself homeless to care for Dolly because he already has a dog, baby and girlfriend at home, and Dolly simply does not get on with my own dog Lulu. HE IS SLEEPING ON HIS FRIENDS FLOOR TO CARE FOR HER.
Dolly has a huge open wound on her leg and needs urgent surgery to her leg and, ear and head, this is due to take place next week. The vet has estimated it will cost between £350-£700, which is a big leap!
David has chipped Dolly already.
Dolly can be re-homed and is already toilet trained, walks well on the lead and is learning to sit stay etc. She is not hyperactive when with people, and is easy to have around. It’s just when she gets left alone or is with other dogs that she is a pain in the ass.
It’s funny that it was man who has hurt her and caused her physical and psychological pain and yet it is our attention she still craves…. would we be as forgiving as people?
If you want to help Dolly, you can do so very easily:
1) Send love and support.
2) Invite as many people as you can to the Facebook group ‘Save Dolly’ where you will also find regular updates
3) Send money, (make cheques payable to the Victoria Park Village Fundraisers and send to 487 Roman Road, London, E3 5LX). Online payments can be made via Paypal – please email or see Dolly’s Facebook page for more info. All proceeds will go directly to Dolly’s bills and care and any excess will be left with the Victoria Park Village Fundraisers, whom collect money to give help and care to terminally ill children.
4) Offer Dolly a new home – there are strict criteria and we are very lucky to now have the help of a wonderful bull breed specialist who will be conducting all home checks.
5) Offer any suggestions for how we can raise more money to foot her bills – at present Vet Bills alone will be more than 1,000 pounds, let alone her food etc whilst we find her new home.

Sammy (a.k.a Amos)
progress update: 20th July
Sammy will be going to his new home tomorrow!
progress update: 1st July
Thanks to Claire for this update!

You were absolutely spot on about Sammy needing to be around another dog!
His personality changed completely when we brought him back to be with the boys again.
He was quite nervous but he has been affectionate and enjoys being stroked and tickled.
He ate well when he was left alone with no distractions.
He thinks men (well Mark) are lost sheep that need to be rounded up!
Unfortunately he didn’t take advantage of the garden & the nice weather this weekend.
The big wide world was a bit much for him especially as it was windy.
He would make a few brave attempts to go outside but frequently returned to the safety of the crate and was happy to stay there or keep me company in the lounge.
He did have an extremely brave moment on sunday morning when he chased up the garden and back into the house three times in succession the look on his face was hilarious!
Considering his dislike of going outside he was clean in the house.
I have never known a dog hold on so long between calls of nature without an accident.
What has he been used to? we ask ourselves!
I don’t think he knows what to make of dog toys.
The ball I left around for him got a few funny looks but his curiosity must have got the better of him because I later found it in his bed.
He went off it again when he sat on it and it let out a long loud squeak!.
The football also got some attention when he thought I wasn’t looking but given his nervous disposition I removed it just in time to stop him popping it!
Instead he made his own fun by ripping up the newspaper I had put out in case of accidents.
He was delighted when I presented him with his very own cardboard tube and a small box to destroy.
I’ve just finished picking up the bits! (I think he’s into recycling or paper mache)

Sammy ( centre front ), Flash ( bottom left ), Harley ( top right )

Sammy is about a year old and very affectionate.
He will make a very loyal companion.
He was kept in a very small pen with another puppy for most of his life.
His only contact with people was when he was fed.
As he was not socialised as a puppy he has taken a long time to trust people and get used to new surroundings and everyday objects.
He was very unsure of himself when he was out of his familiar surroundings.
He has made great progress and is beginning to show his real character.
He loves his walks and is very good with other dogs.
He needs a home where there is another dog as he has always been with one and it will give him the confidence that he lacks.

The Shaky Bottle
The Shaky Bottle is one of Helen’s Magical Artifacts.
It has extraordinary powers and Compels Obedience In All Known Dogs.
Even me.
It doesn’t look very scary to the untrained eye. It looks like an empty old plastic green lilt bottle, which might make A Good Chewing Object.
But no dog ever goes near the Shaky Bottle to try and chew it.
This is because the bottle contains some Stones of Arcane Wrath.
Helen and her friends know how to awaken the Stones of Arcane Wrath and then they make a noise most terrible which causes all us dogs to Instantly Cease Mucking About.
I must admit I used to be scared of The Shaky Bottle, and even now that I’m several months older and so Scared of Nothing At All, I still know that it is best not to be Shaken At.
The Shaky Bottle usually appears when we’re in the car.
More specifically it seems, it usually appears when I’m in the car.
When I ride in the front with Mark, Helen gives him The Shaky Bottle and I know well enough to stay in the footwell.
At least some of the time.
When I forget and try and jump through the window, chew the gearstick, or change the Bauhaus tape, The Stones of Arcane Wrath are invoked by the magic Shaky Bottle.
Even Mutley knows not to mess with The Shaky Bottle. Mutley is my hero but when he tries to climb into the front when Helen is driving, or if he starts singing his Epic Ballad of Constant Barking, the Shaky Bottle soon brings him back into line.
Even Rocco can’t explain coherently why it is so disconcerting to be Shaken At, and he thinks he Knows It All.
He also can’t explain how the Stones of Arcane Wrath ended up becoming trapped inside in the first place. Helen must be a Wielder of Magical Power herself. No wonder they are so angry, all that Arcane Wrath, and they can’t get out of an old plastic pop bottle.
I laugh at them!
But only when I’m very very very sure that they can’t hear me …

Harley and Buster playing tug!

progress update: 7th July
We are really pleased to hear that Harley loves his new home!
“Just to let you know that Harley has settled in so well.
Buster adores him (Peter does as well)
He really is a delightful chap and so loving.
He found out how to use the dog door quickly and is out in the garden with Buster roaring round.
We couldn’t have picked a better dog, thank you for letting us adopt him.
Best wishes and good luck with the others.
I will keep you updated and send some photos”

Harley’s shampoo and set day.
Today I needed to be clean for some mysterious reason that only Helen knew.
She locked the other dogs out and filled a bucket with water which she then threw over me !
I didn’t understand why she would do this and felt it best not to co-operate with this strange behaviour.
This resulted in me being tied to the taps whilst she lathered some smelly stuff into my coat.
Here at the rescue no one worries too much how dirty we get on walks so there is a lot of dirt in my coat.
I could hear Helen muttering that she didn’t know how she was ever going to get me clean and it was a job for the professionals.
If Sue hadn’t moved to Australia she would of groomed me whilst Helen had a cuppa and kept her feet dry.
Helen’s feet were very wet after I had jumped about a bit.
Even after three scrubs my curly soft coat still had dirt in it,
this comes from enjoying rolling in mud.
Sue has banned Helen from ever cutting dog’s coats as she is not the best stylist with the scissors,
in spite of this she said the only way to tackle the job was to cut some of my gorgeous coat.
I was very patient and stood very still as she was rather close to my manhood.
Eventually she said I would do, put a new collar on me with a new tag and put me in the car.
She took me to a nice doggy hotel called White Topps where a lady was waiting to meet me.
She also had a Wheaten Terrier called Buster and we like each other straight away.
We went for a walk along the beach together and then Helen told me that I would have to leave her and be brave as I had a new home, but not to worry as I could come back if I am not happy.
I wasn’t sure at first and stuck close to her but now as you will see from my photo with my new pal that I am very pleased to be in my new home!

progress update: 2nd July
Harley may have found a home, he is going to see it tomorrow!

HARLEY’S DIARY JUNE 14th
I have been told that I am a big woolly bear and that Helen could just eat me up.
I do hope that she doesn’t mean this in the way that I would like to eat cats!
Dooley has been trying to teach me sky chasing and
groaning but I am much more interested in chasing my ball.
I have been told several times that I am an absolute dream out on a walk,
I do try to be on my best behaviour and always come back when called.
Sometimes though I see scary reflections in the window or hear
a noise outside and then I can be very protective and run outside to
growl and charge the intruder.
Helen says that I get spooked by strange
things and as I don’t believe that humans know how
to look after themselves I feel I have to do this for them.
She says that I will need a home that will work with me to get me over this and
as I am terrier and not a woolly bear I have a terrier mind set.
Sometimes in my past people have not been too kind to me and have hit me,
so if I hear a raised voice or a quick movement I still duck my
head down and try to be invisible.
I don’t do this as much as I used to
as Helen doesn’t believe in hitting dogs and hates cruelty.
Harley is still awaiting a home.
He is a neutered male wheaten terrier approx 2-3yrs old
He is very good natured and friendly,
great fun and very playful,
a lovely chap if occasionally a bit boisterous.
Harley is very sociable when out, loves to chase a ball, meet new dogs and people.
He is the model of good behaviour when called.
He’s not fond of swimming but loves to get his feet wet
He is also very well mannered in the car.
His blood test results were clear and he seems in
the best of health!
