Last Night
\nI stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peep.
\nI could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
\nI whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
\n\u201cIt\u2019s me, I haven\u2019t left you, I\u2019m well, I\u2019m fine, I\u2019m here.\u201d
\nI was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
\nYou were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
\nI was with you at the shops today; your arms were getting sore.
\nI longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
\nI was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
\nI want to reassure you, that I\u2019m not lying there.
\nI walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
\nI gently put my paw on you; I smiled and said, \u201cIt\u2019s me.\u201d
\nYou looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
\nI tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
\nIt\u2019s possible for me to be near you every day.
\nTo say to you with certainty, \u201cI never went away.\u201d
\nYou sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew\u2026
\nIn the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
\nThe day is over\u2026I smile and watch you yawning
\nAnd say, \u201cGoodnight, God bless, I\u2019ll see you in the morning.\u201d
\nAnd when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
\nI\u2019ll rush across to greet you and we\u2019ll stand, side by side.
\nI have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
\nBe patient, live your journey out\u2026then come home to be with me.
