JAN 7 – PHOTO SESSION IN LONDON WITH RAY PALMER FOR KERRANG!

JAN 15 – HISTORY OF A TIME TO COME IS RELEASED

Your first album was a great success. Did Noise anticipate this? “No,” laughs Andy. “We know that because at first they said there would be no compact disc and after about two weeks of its release it did around 20,000 straight away and lo and behold a CD popped through my letterbox. It did a lot better than everyone anticipated.”

First of all, can you tell me about your decision to add a second guitarist

Frazer: “Well, we made the decision after our European tour. We had taken Richard Scott with us on tour for the extra sound and it had really worked out great. But Richard said he wouldn’t join us full time because he wanted to continue with his other band, but we had to get another guitarist because of the improvement in the sound.”

How did those European dates go then?

Frazer: “It was ace, really good.”

What about the Dynamo Festival in Eindhoven?

Frazer: “20,000 people at the Dynamo, right, it was like there were the Dynamo and Aardschok festivals, the Dynamo got loads more people, there were 6,000 at Aardschok and 20,000 at the Dynamo and nobody published anything about it, only Metal Hammer (cough) but it was a proper festival, excellent.” Andy agrees, “It was mega.”

Best date of the European tour then?

Andy: “Well, I think it was the best gig we’ve ever done.” Frazer agrees.

BIRMINGHAM ROCKFEST- ENGLAND cancelled

You recently pulled out of the Birmingham Rockfest, what was the reason behind that? Andy: “We’ve got a lot of press stuff to do for the tour in September and also we did the Monster Mosh thing a few weeks ago and found that being the headline band, with nine bands being on before you, the crowd is going to be very tired before you go on, especially if the crowd aren’t going to be completely into thrash. I just don’t think it would’ve been an ideal situation.”

Fair enough. What’s all this about going to the U.S. then? Andy: “That was another reason for pulling out of the Rockfest. The States isn’t happening just yet, but I hope to be going over to do promotional work sometime because the first album has just been released through CBS over there, and they’ll be doing a lot of press for it. But it’s not going to come off now, not until after the European thing. We’re touring with RAGE in September through to October – a full month on the road.”

AUG 10 – ASTORIA – LONDON – ENGLAND – FIRST GIG WITH SIMON JONES
Wildfire/The Clerical Conspiracy included in set

“We’re more nervous about this than we were for the Dynamo Festival, I mean, it’s hardly anything next to that, but it’s more nerve racking. It’s like Holland, it was harder playing to say 70 people in the clubs because you’re eye to eye with them, when you’ve got 20,000 people just going loony that’s it, you just go out there and do it.”

FRAZER:
That was the Astoria gig were we had the riot. The security was the venue’s in-house guys, and there was no diving; it got really brutal, really violent at the front. Andy tried to get in between this security guy and this kid, and he got knocked to the ground… Martin kept having to ask people to stop diving, trying to calm the situation, because it was getting out of hand… we were shouting and screaming at our people to pull the security, and eventually they did – and then it went mad. Literally the whole stage was awash with people, we couldn’t see the rest of the band. It was just insane.

“The German part of the tour was the most monotonous,” moans Andy. “It was nineteen days in all and it was if you were playing to the same crowd. You could even pick out the same faces. Y’know, blond hair, blond eyes, leather mac…”

OCT 1 – TUTTLINGEN : BLUE NOTE – LUXEMBOURG

OCT 2 – ROCKFABRIK – LUDWIGSBURG – GERMANY

Luxembourg has some great people, the club we played at had their last band their in 1981 which were MOTÖRHEAD. It was weird for us, a small English band, to have people coming up to you and shaking your hand saying ‘You’re English, you’re rockstars, you know Lemmy?’ We were going ‘No, no’, they must think England is a town or something. Everyone was really friendly, that was such a welcome.

1988 Oct – Rock En El Matadero Special

“Spain was very smelly,” interjects Andy. “Fucking hell. I think it’s down to their great sewage system. The crowds were very enthusiastic, but that’s all I have got to say about Spaniards.”

“The venue was an old slaughterhouse,” Martin elaborates. “We even had a police escort to the stage. The inhouse P.A. you wouldn’t believe, the guy must have been deaf.”
