MOURNING HAS BROKEN RELEASED

What can you tell us about the concept behind the title “Mourning Has Broken”?
” The album cover features a War memorial which is also the old guy we used on the first two covers. It’s simpler than Dreamweaver which was very bitty. We’ve gone for a bolder image that can be transferred onto things like stagesets.”

Have you ever had any pressure to do cover versions or a catchy little three minute number?
” No, never,” he tells me with a surprised look.

Would you ever consider it to boost your popularity in the mass market?
“I doubt it very much. We don’t really need to do it. We actually did “Number Of The Beast” in the studio and we knocked a full minute off it. I don’t think it will ever get used though. Mind you we only did that song first off in the studio to get all the sounds right before we recorded our own stuff.”

Andy is frank about what drove the final nails into the Sabbat coffin. “I’ll tell you what caused the band to go their separate ways: Me! We did two shows and after the second I was so horrified as to how bad it was and just said,’Fuck it, This ends here.'”

ANDY: (Emphatically) “I don’t listen to this. There is some mad guitar playing on there, some of the shredding is ridiculous, but it sounds thrown together, which it was. It shouldn’t have had the Sabbat name on it.”

On the topic of Sabbat albums. You guys recorded three albums but you have made no secret that you believe “Morning Has Broken” should never have carried the Sabbat name. What makes that record a non-Sabbat album?

It just didn’t have Martin really. Martin is such an integral part of the band. I wrote those songs with Martin in mind and we were put in a situation where he quit the band, I was there with all the debts to pay and also still contracted to do an album as Sabbat so I didn’t have much choice. Looking back we shouldn’t have done it as Sabbat but we didn’t have a lot of choice as Martin had gone and done his own thing (Skyclad) which sounded more like Sabbat than Sabbat did. We tried something different and it just didn’t work.

Did you ever listen to “Mourning is Broken,” the infamous third SABBAT album? If so, what did you think of it? I know Andy has distanced himself from it — I assume there’s never been talk of resurrecting any songs from it for the current setlist?

Walkyier: There are many parts of “Mourning Has Broken” which are actually very good. I think that Andy will agree that if the band had changed its name, then this album would perhaps have been judged far more fairly and achieved much greater success. The problem with a band like SABBAT is that it has a very distinctive sound indeed, and any attempt to change it would greatly disappoint the fans — which is one of the main reasons why we’re not planning to try and write any new material twenty years down the line.

I don’t think that I could emulate Ritchie Desmond‘s vocal style any better than he could copy mine, as we’re two completely different singers. So therefore I doubt very much that we’ll be performing any of those tracks during our upcoming shows.
