RICHARD SCOTT taken on for live guitar duties but declines to join, preferring to concentrate on own band No Excuse

Richard Scott from NO EXCUSE played with you on the tour and I believe you asked him to join at one stage? “Yeah. Richard was OK, but looking back on it now, he didn’t really fit in. He’s a great guitarist, he can play anything from VAN HALEN to thrash. Very versatile. It came about because we were doing two radio broadcasts in Holland and so we needed a second guitar to make the sound a lot thicker.”

SIMON [JACK HAMMER ] JONES joins as second guitarist

Simon used to be in HOLOSADE. How did you come to choose him as second guitarist? “We didn’t actually get many tapes through”, says Andy surprisingly. “A lot of them were your usual bedroom type guitarists and so hadn’t got much idea of gigging. Simon seemed to have enough experience on the live front as well as having done an album with HOLOSADE, so he was familiar with the studio as well. He’s also a very tight player. On top of all that he’s from up north as well, so he has the same sense of humour!”

So what you’re saying is you didn’t want any southerners? “Er… not really,” Andy admits. “Nothing against them, but it just seems a totally different way of life to us.”

NEIL WATSON joins as second guitarist

FRAZER leaves

“Frazer had been saying for quite a while now that he hadn’t been enjoying things. He didn’t like the type of music we were making, which came as a bit of a shock after five years of playing together. I didn’t realise that he was quite that serious about leaving.”

FRAZER:
So it was the original band baack together for the Cradle Of Filth gigs, and that was bloody rows all the time; Martin and Andy fell out constantly, and it was hard work.
Then we went to Germany to play the Keep It True festival, which was really good, but I was literally stood onstage thinking, ‘I can’t be arsed…’ I’d forgotten half the stuff I was meant to be playing as well. The best thing about the weekend was meeting and talking to everyone.
Then we got offered the Day Of Darkness festival in Ireland, but I was going to Bloodstock that weekend, so they got Gizz Butt in on bass, and he just played bass from there on out. I saw them at Wacken, and that was surreal, hearing the intro and being in the audience instead of backstage.

unfortunately we can’t do any gigs abroad with Frazer as his beard has become too heavy and we can’t afford the excess baggage with Ryan Air. He’s actually having problems standing upright because of the wildlife nesting in it.

GRAHAM [GIZZ] BUTT [ex English Dogs / The Prodigy] becomes live bassist

What were the reasons for Frazer’s departure and how did Gizz get the gig as his replacement?

Well he hadn’t played for like twenty or so years and there were a few issues at home which weren’t good for him, also we could just tell he wasn’t into it. He wasn’t rehearsing, he wasn’t focused on it. I mean we’ve all put the time and effort into getting the playing back up to scratch again and it was obvious he was the weakest link. There was no falling out, we all still get on with him. He has a lot of work commitments with his t-shirt company and it just became apparent that he didn’t have either the time or the inclination to put the effort into it. As far as his replacement Gizz, I’ve know him since about 1987. Sabbat played with his old band Wardance years ago and I’ve stayed good friends with him since then. He even crewed for us on the Cradle dates so he knew what the band was about. He is such a talented player he just came in tabbed the music out and went away and learnt it. It was no effort for us and he fits in great as a person as well.
