queen of ruins
This former home of three Queens of England was destroyed by fire in 1978 and has been derelict ever since.
Originally a 12th century fortified manor house,
granted a license to crenellate and become a castle in 1266,
with deep moat, curtain walling, hall, solar block and gatehouse.
Later alterations in the 15th and 17th centuries before being remodelled into a country house in the 19th century.
On my visit today it was clear to see where the recent very strong winds have blown over a large section of walls, their neglected supporting scaffolding included.
