FROM THE NEW FOREST DOG OWNERS GROUP..

A dog has received injuries, possibly caused by a chemical contaminant in water on the forest. The message we received is as follows….
“My dog Mac was walked recently in the forest opposite the Hare&Hounds pub near Sway on Tuesday late afternoon. He was kept on lead for most of the walk. He was carrying his tennis ball in his mouth which had fallen into some stagnant water. Within an hour of returning home he began to lick his lips, was unable to swallow, the inside of his mouth was bright red, his jowls began to swell and he was drooling excessively. I rushed him to vet…he was given an antibiotic/ steroid injection and pain relief. It was thought he had come into contact with something corrosive or bacterial that had burned the inside of his mouth. He continued to worsen through the night and I returned to the vet the next morning. Upon examination the vet found lesions on his tongue and ulcers inside his mouth. He was given more pain relief/anti-inflammatories and an anti acid to line his esphogaus and stomach in case he had swallowed any of the toxin…within 3 hours Mac deteriorated further and I returned to the vet…he was immediately admitted so they could put a camera down his throat to check for further damage and investigations. To date Mac is stable but has had a feeding tube fitted, is receiving fluids and pain relief intravenously and is under observation. His bloods have been normal throughout and the damage seems to be localised in his mouth. I have contacted the forestry commission and the local verderers to inform them about Mac’s condition and ask them to test the waters in that area for toxins/poisons/bacteria…Alabama Rot has been mentioned as a possible cause but my vet has not had a case present so quickly in the mouth. My reason for writing this is to warn other dog owners/walkers about the possible contamination of the waters in that area and to be vigilante with your dogs for any of the above symptoms. If anyone else has had their dogs present with similar symptoms could you please contact the above authorities or Priory Vets in Purewell. I was fortunate to get Mac to the vet so quickly and am hoping he makes a complete recovery but other livestock/wildlife may not be so I hope the above authorities act quickly.

Cassie

Cassie has now found a home !!

Hi,

I am still here at the Rescue waiting for a home and even though it is very comfortable here with good company, walks at the beach and quite tasty grub, I would love to find a home.
I have been told I have comic ears which stick up like beacons and lean inwards towards each other.
I really can’t see why this is so funny and a rather rude thing to say !!
Today on a walk Pippin was being a total nuisance or so Helen said, I of course was behaving myself impeccably as usual.
To keep Pippin on his toes I took him off for a good run which gets rid of some of his energy.
I see this as one of my jobs now. One of my other jobs is playing with the Collie who has an Irish name I can’t pronounce.
He has taken time to settle in and I have been showing him the ropes and explaining the rules of the dog room to him.
Which first and foremost is not to pull the blankets on the floor and chew them up, he hasn’t got the hang of this one yet but I am persevering with it. Especially as I am very often lying on the blankets when he pulls them off the bed !!

Cassie is a 9 month old Lurcher – a cross Bearded Collie.

Cassie has been with us since a few weeks before Christmas and what an absolute pleasure to have here.
She is so very good off the lead returning immediately when she is called.
She loves to bring a ball back and forth dropping at myfeet and is soooo pleased to say “Hello” to everyone and their dogs that we meet on walks.

Cassie spent a couple of days helping to fundraise for the rescue and she was a star.
She loved all the attention and getting lots of fuss from people.
She was very good with all the children she met there.
Not sure what she is like with cats not having any here at the Rescue.
Once she has had a good walk she settles down for the day.
Cassie has always had the company of other dogs and I think it would be nice for her to find a home with another dog companion or someone who is at home a lot.

I wanted to give you an update on our DAWG rescue, his name is Vinnie but you might remember him as Cracker!
We have had him for 4 years, he is really one of a kind… naughty at times but fills our lives with so much and really could not be without him!
We still get asked daily what breed he is and we answer… he’s a Vinnie!
You guys do such wonderful work and I just wanted to say thank you!
