Hi Helen

It’s me Bennie

Wow its great here

I’m not sure but Sophie thinks I’m a Hobbit as you can see from the
photo I get second breakfast.

I’ve discovered this big wet and sandy thing too and I love it.

I can run and jump and play with all sorts of other dogs.

I have been for a paddle but I’m a little scared of the big wavy wet
thing though.

progress update: 15th May 09

Hi Helen

Life here is really fun.
Lots of attention and lots of treats
I’ve discovered this thing called walkies which is real fun.
I got to see and meet some other dogs and look at all sorts of stuff that
makes noise but I wasn’t bothered.
When I get home I’m really tired and flop on my bed.
Apparently I’ve got the vets Saturday which sounds fun and tonight I went
for a test drive in the back of a land rover with Chloe and Sophie.
WOW that was scary at first but after a while and some chocolate I stood up
and watched where I was going.
Oh well hey ho my dinner calls.

progress update: Apr 20th 09

Hi Helen
Well after you left I stayed in my cage for a while cos I felt safe
but I was tempted out by some really tasty doggy chews.

The nice people left me alone for a while cos I think they knew I was a little
shy and a bit scared.
I then decided to explore a little and walked anywhere I liked.

I slept well all night on my new super soft doggy bed and had a chew of
some of my new toys. Because they had been so nice to me I did my
stuff on the paper they left for me.

When I saw them first thing in the morning I was a little shy and a little excited.

I had some fantastic breakfast and then I went outside to explore and play.

They ignored me for a while and I could do whatever I wanted.

I made a new friend too. A funny looking dog that purrs
and is called Smokey.

Anyway its all going well and I think I’m going to like it here.

I’ll write soon :-)

progress update: 19th Apr 09

Bennie has now found a new home !!

Today Helen and Jane picked me up and took me back to the rescue.
I took a while to catch as I have not met many people before and am used
to living outside in a very small area of space.
I was terrified at first.
When I got to the rescue I was given a bath to get some of the dirt out of my coat.
I liked it when I was dried with a towel and started to relax a bit.
Jane took me home to her place to meet her family and Ozzy the dog that lives there.
He told me he was a rescue once and had a terrible life but life is good now and will be for me
too soon.
Jane and her family are kind to me and their garden is huge, I
didn’t know that there could be so much space to explore.
I am a Collie so it is in my breed to run and burn off energy I’ve just never had
the chance to do this before.Jane told Helen I am doing quite well and
she has put a cage for me to go into whenever I start to feel
overwhelmed by it all.
There is a blanket in it and the door is left open for me all the time, it feels safe in the cage a bit like a den.

I ate my food from a clean dish and it was the best meal I have ever eaten.
Lots of people have visited the house today and I am gradually getting used to a busy household.

in order that we can ensure the continued well-being of the dogs in our care.

We will sometimes re-home further afield to this but only if the homes are exceptional.

We are NOT looking for just ANY home that is offered.

All potential homes will be assessed to try and ensure the best possible home to cater for the differing needs of each individual dog that we look after.

Lizzie has now been rehomed !!

Lizzie is somewhere between a year to two years old,
gets on well with dogs, is clean in the house and good off the lead.
She does need a little more training to walk on the lead without yanking your arm off but she will get there!

Buster is happily rehomed !

‘Dooley walked in the house like it is his home.

Hasn’t growled or anything at my husband, has even been playing with him in the house.

The halti is great too.

He is a joy.

He made another border collie friend today.

He was even good with his owner.

I think he will be a great dog.’

Dooley was visited today by a photographer from the Echo,

who had heard how nonplussed Dooley felt at Rocco’s recent media stardom !

You can expect to see him in the Echo before long !!

progress update: 19th Sep

READY FOR REHOMING !!

Dooley has now been at the Rescue for several months ‘in rehab’.

He has made very good progress and is now no longer the very fearful dog he once was.

We are now looking for a permanent home for Dooley, one that will be able to continue to improve his confidence and recovery.

He is very used to other dogs at the Rescue, but he is still a little eccentric in some of his ways.

We will be looking for an extra special home for him, with someone who understands nervous collies and who has the patience to care for him.

It may be that Dooley is more suited to a home which is not a domestic family situation, since he needs to be worked and active to find a good use for all his nervous energy.

Like his fellow rehab dog Rocco, he needs someone who is prepared to visit him at the Rescue repeatedly until he gets used to them enough to build up a trust.

Dooley is a young Collie who has suffered from a stimulus overload.

He is extremely nervous of new people but is gradually losing this fear.

As with a lot of Collies he is driven crazy by the fast motions of cars and feels that they must be herded into a tidy circle.

He will remain in his foster home whilst he is rehabilated.

He now goes for a walk off the lead and we will continue

with training to enable him to learn that his job is not to round up all moving things!

As he is conscientous and like many workoholics it may take him a while to ease up on his work load.

We will be looking for a home who has experience of Collies and where there are not young children.

He would also benefit from living with another dog as despite what we rather vain humans think he will learn far more from another calmer dog who already knows the social niceties!

Dooley’s progress report: April 8th

He is settling in with new dogs much better and is becoming more socialised.

He goes off the lead all the time now and looks to check where I am.

He is far less nervous and gradually becoming more used to a busier household where people come and go.

He still feels he should give a bit of a bark just so not to let the side down and also not to lose face in front of the new dogs.

On Friday he met a lady out with her two dogs and ran up to them all quite keen to say hello.

Next week I will start to sit with him on a busy high street to get him used to traffic.

Dooley’s progress report: 21st April

Dooley’s latest update is that he went for a walk on the recreation

ground where there were more distractions.

He and Spike raced after a ball and Dooley saw a cyclist and ran off to round him up but an

improvement in his behaviour is that he stopped short of the cyclist and came back to me.

A massive step forward for Dooley!

He is also starting to come back to see where I am and today for the first time

came back straight away when I called him and sat to have his lead put on.

He also met two strange dogs and a man up the field and again came

back to my call.

The horses in the next field did too but this is by the way.

He has also given up barking all the way back home and only does this

for half the journey,

I think his association with barking and the car is possibly starting to ease off.

His next step is to get used to bikes

and my intention is to introduce him up close to mine first and then

start to walk him next to it and then to cycle slowly with him.

Dooley is still young and he will in time get over his obsessions.

At the moment after a close call with a newly painted door he is wearing the

latest doggy fashion of one painted ear!

Dooley’s progress report: 30th April

Dooley has improved beyond expectation, he is walked regularly at

places with the distractions of people, runners, bikes and other dogs.

What a star he is, today he ignored and came back when called from two

cyclists and a pair of runners.

A friend of mine Brian who is a behaviourist quoted once to me “If a

dog doesn’t have a job, he will find one himself”

and Dooley had found himself several jobs previously to coming to the rescue.

I have always taken the attitude that if you run the hind legs of an

overactive or problem dog as the first part of training

then and only then are they in a state of mind to learn.

Dooley has since being with us had very long walks and this week he was ready to

take his exercise in more public places.

His new job is to race after a

ball and try to get it before the other dogs do.

He barely looks at

anything else whilst doing this.

He would with more training make a

great agility or flyball dog!

Lily has now been rehomed !

Lily has gone to her new home today !

I am about 2 years old and have been fostering with Jane for two months. I was taken into a pound to be put to sleep so as you can guess I had a lucky escape. Jane says that I am the easiest dog that she has ever fostered, I am good when left in the house, now house trained and I only ever chew my lead when left, never anyone else’s belongings. Jane can even leave a bag of rubbish on the floor and I won’t touch it.

The people at the Rescue thought I was a Boxer Cross but they have been told I am an
American Bulldog. Helen said a dog is a dog and who cares about what breed I am, she has a soft spot for my breed as she once had a dog like me in the rescue called Buster and she would of kept him if she could. He used to foster the puppies and they slept curled up round his neck. Helen told Jane that I have the same temperament as Buster. I love other dogs and when off the lead forget myself when playing with them and Jane has to come and get me when she wants to walk on.

Last week Helen came over and took photos and video off me playing with my ball which she will put on the website so watch this space. Someone came to see me this week I would loved to have gone to live with her and she thought I was gorgeous but a little too big for her small garden. Never mind someone will turn up for me.

Lily is a two year-old boxer cross.

She is quite good off the lead but needs a bit more training.

She gets on well with other dogs.
