DOG lover Philip Wilkinson has urged pet owners to be on their guard after his retriever became ill after a walk in the New Forest.

Nine-year-old Buster suffered severe sickness and a swollen stomach after a walk at South Oakley near Burley.

The black, flat-coated retriever was rushed to the PDSA hospital the following day and spent two nights on antibiotics and a drip before being allowed home.

“He is normally a very healthy dog so I think he must have eaten something poisonous,” said Philip, of Curzon Road, Bournemouth. “I don’t know if anyone had left anything deliberately or whether there are plants or fungi that are poisonous to dogs – I just wanted to warn people to keep an eye on their pets.”

Buster was unable to eat for several days but is now on the mend.

Veterinary charity the PDSA warns increasing numbers of pets are being treated for accidental poisoning.

Spokesman Alexander Campbell said: “Sadly many of those things can prove fatal. It is vitally important that owners keep any substances that can harm pets well out of reach and react quickly and responsibly if they suspect poisoning might have occurred.”

Glen

Glen has now found a home !!

This is Glen who arrived on Wednesday and is looking for a home.
Glen is about 18 months, quite a tall Collie.
Sadly I think he has had a rough start in life and is very nervous.
However each day he is growing in confidence and trust.
Today he had a much needed bath which he didn’t like very much but he was a good boy.
He is good on the lead and doesn’t seem bothered by traffic.
He doesn’t like me throwing sticks for Ozzie, he just cowers in fear, so I would imagine sticks have been used for other reasons in his previous life. He is crated at night and never makes a sound.
Glen loves his food and needs to put on a bit of weight.
Will update again when he has found his feet a little more.

Hi, I arrived here this week and am sharing bed space with Murphy or would do if I wanted to do so.
He seems to think that he can share my bed and toys, I have other ideas about this.
I love a cuddle from people but to be honest would prefer to be an only dog.
I do like to take charge of them all as I am an organiser.
I heard Helen say I will feel better about other dogs when I have been to the vet – not sure how going to the vet for a chat is going to make any difference.
Helen likes Terriers she says they have bundles of character.

Today I took Stanley and Dexter to the Allotment with me and I can’t say that they were as helpful as Buddy,Clive and Charlie !!
They had a great time chasing each other across my vegetable beds and crushing my plants.
Dexter thought he would help me collect the potatoes and sneaked off with a couple to chomp into at his leisure.
Stanley decided to dig into the Bees nest whilst I was weeding right next to it,thankfully they are Mining Bees and very placid.
I am afraid this was the final straw and they were marched back to the car.
Next time I go there they will be staying at home and Tess will be coming with me.

Hello. I am Dexter, a Border terrier cross Shitzu.
I arrived into the rescue two days ago and Dooley has been explaining the rules to me i.e we have to try not to throw our blankets onto the floor and that he is top dog ( after Mutley and Spike).
Helen said that I am a very amiable chap and I certainly am but I am not too keen on the little people called children they run around too much.
I do like dogs though and there is plenty of that here.

Everyone is looking forward to christmas and have even been told i have some presents.
Hope its a nice chewy toy..
Anyway Helen, I hope you and Jackie and not forgetting my old mate Basil have a truly lovely christmas.

Hi, Just an update for you. Bailey aka Buzz has settled in so well. He is such a good boy. No trouble at all. He has figured out where the treats are kept and looks at me to the treats and back to me. As if to say come on, dont be tight with the treats. He loves his walks up the woods. Buzz especially likes the park with his ball and he went straight in the sea down at Hamworthy and got me completely soaked when he came out. My daughter found this highly amusing. Will post some pics very soon.
Thank you Helen and Jackie for Buzz.
Hope you all have a great Christmas and Best wishes for the New Year.
Love Michelle..x

This is the lovely Bailey.
He’s about a year old and is full of energy.
He hasn’t had much training in the past but within an hour of being here is is playing fetch with a tennis ball bringing it back and sitting to wait for it to be thrown again.

Dear Helen,
We recently adopted Prince and collected him from Nicky and Kevin just over 2 weeks ago.
He is so adorable and we thank you so much for letting us adopt him – even though we live in North Somerset. He has settled in to our home so well with our other two dogs and we love him dearly.
Nicky and her family are so kind and do such a wonderful job with the dogs they foster.
Thank you once again.
Happy Christmas and God Bless in the wonderful work you all do.

Prince is 7 months old and is been with us nearly a week now.
Prince is getting used to our busy household and he is gaining in confidence every day.

Hi, I am a Collie and will round up sheep quite nicely unlike Murphy and Mickey who have no idea of the Collie job.
Saying that I am not hectic like some Collies.
I have been a country boy who lived on a farm but they had too many dogs.
I am quite unsure about everything at the moment.
Helen has sent me to stay with Nicky, Kevin and family and their three dogs as she thinks it will do me good to be in a busy household.
It is taking a bit of getting used to so much to take in, the TV for a start I have never seen one of those before.
I am beginning to feel less anxious about it all.
Nicky and Kevin will send in photos of me soon.
