The Hounds of Bonkersville vs The Great Grimpen Mire

Last weekend Mark came down to the Rescue to explain why he has been a bit tardy with getting some of the website updates online recently and eat Helen out of house and home see how we were all getting on and continually annoy Helen by constantly asking her why Jackson hasn’t found a home yet.

I always, usually,frequently,  sometimes try to be on my best behaviour when Mark is around because it is a Well-Known Fact that he awards extra Bonios to The Best-Behaved Dog Of The Day. Remarkably Obviously I usually win this much coveted prize because I make sure I behave when Mark is looking Spike and Deflating-Balloon-Dog Jackson can be relied upon to behave far worse than I do!

However this time the Rescue has been playing host to new DAWGdog Seamus who has very quickly gone from being a rather wayward rascal to being an absolute star. I say this myself as we get along great as he neither growls nastily at me everytime there is food around ( cue:- Spike) or constantly yabbers at my face every few seconds ( cue:- Jackson)

So the other day when we all went on a big walk in the New Forest Seamus was let off his lead with us for the first time. Since that part of the Forest looked a lot like Dartmoor, we decided to play Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles. Of course, I was Sherlock Holmes as I’m obviously the cleverest and Seamus was my trusty side-kick Dr Watson:

We had great fun tracking for miles across the Moor, easily outclassing the officers from Scotland Yard ( played by Spike and Balloon Dog Jackson), until we came to The Great Grimpen Mire. Unfortunately, Dr Watson wasn’t quite as on the case as he should have been at this point and  failed to recognise The Great Grimpen Mire until he fell up to his waist in it. Being The Brave Hero of course I immediately leap in to save him. The next bit didn’t go quite as planned – Dr Watson, being a small dog who had partaken of only a light luncheon, climbed out unaided, bearing only muddy trousers for his pains, wheras I ( The Daring Hero ) plunged deep into the mire and vanished under the surface, to surface sometime later covered in most of the very smelly swamp and stuck in thick gloopy quicksand-like mud.

Next thing I know, I’m being unceremoniously hauled out by Mark grabbing my harness without so much as a by-your-leave- Master-Mutley. I immediately showered him with a huge spray of filthy swamp lest he get any funny ideas about who was supposed to be the hero of the day whilst I valiantly tried to regain my dignity.
It wasn’t easy when my wardrobe had gone from dashing Sherlock Holmes attire via Swamp Thing to The Creature from The Black Lagoon in as many minutes:-

To top off the indignity we all had to have a bath as soon as we got back!!

Even me!!

Seamus didn’t like having a bath very much but he did like getting towelled off so he hid under my towel whilst I was being dried.

To make up for it all we were both later awarded Best Behaved Dog Of The Day Prizes!

(unlike the next day when No Prizes were awarded because we were all Too Badly Behaved but there is no need nor space to go into all that sorry episode now…!)



Winston the Westie (a.k.a Scotty)

Winston has now found a home !!

Just some pictures to show you how the lovely Winstons coat is starting to regrow on his face,
he had a lovely time today in the sun out at Matchams forest so a few pictures of him enjoying himself.

progress update: 12/11/11

Hi, I am still here at the Rescue.
I was in a terrible state when I arrived my coat was so badly matted that I didn’t look like a West Highland Terrier and my skin was sore.
I have had a hair cut and treatment from my Doctor and now I look like a different dog.
My hair is growing back and my skin is loads better.
I don’t mind children but like them better when they are above 9 years old.
I love small furry creatures but only to chase them so I guess I had better limit myself to a home without a cat or small furries.

progress update: 11/11/11

Winston is a lovely fella , but all terrier , such a cheecky fella.
He travels well in the car, is clean indoors, sleeps either in his crate or in the kitchen. He is not good with small furries.
But meets and greats the dogs we meet each on our walks.
His undercoat is begining to grow back.
He is a good watch dog often hearing people at the door before my girls do.

he has improved with the cats that he is being fostered with but its still work in progress

Hi
Just an update on the lovely Winston, he has settled in very well, learning to sit and wait for his food, eating alongside my girls too without panicking that they will eat his.
His skin looks better every day and I am sure his undercoat is starting to come through.
He is a lovely fella who loves his walks, travels well in the car.
Is a fantastic little watch dog, not barking all the time only when needed.
Sleeps all night either in his crate or in the kitchen without a peep.

progress update: 16/10/11

Hi
As promised the photos of this lovely fella after he had been to see Sarah for a make over, boy did he need it.
Despite this he was a sweetie standing while he was brushed and trimmed so he can look his best for a new forever home.
He is a real terrier ,despite the fact he is only little he has a big attitude loves his food and enjoying investigating all the new sights and smells.
He is clean at home, sleeps in his crate, good in the car and walks well on a lead.

progress update: 14/10/11
Hi
Just an update on the little Westie, he is a sweet little man in need of a lot of tlc.
He has no undercoat on his body or on a lot of his face.
The matts on his body , tail and head I have cut off.
He has had a bath so he is a lot less fragrant, this was not something he enjoyed but was good anyway.
He walks well on the lead and has met quite a few dogs without a problem.
He travels well in the car. But is not good at all with the cats , chickens , rabbits and guinea pigs .
He is going to cute paws to have a hair cut so will send you some photos after.

progress update: 12/11/11

Hi, I am staying with Niki and her family.
I am 7 years old and my family couldn’t keep me any longer.
I had lived with them since I was a puppy.
I get on well enough with the children here but like Winston would prefer children 9 years up so much easy to understand then the really young ones.
Cats I don’t like so don’t ask me to live with them Yuk !!

Hi Helen just a quick update on Bernard now I know him a little better, well we had a really good day yesterday,
Bernard settled very quickly after being dropped off, he spent much of the afternoon in the garden with the girls
whilst I did some tidying, we then went for a walk which he thoroughly enjoyed, he takes a lot of interest in the
wildlife and can be a bit vocal if he sights a Squirrel or birds.

Bernard was very good last night quiet and clean, hes also happy to go in and out his crate throughout the day,
this morning we went out in the car where again he behaved impeccably, we met Heleanor and her dogs and
had a lovely walk by the river, he was very social with all the dogs and people we met, he really is a lovely
little chap who would make a lovely addition to a family with older children, Bernards only vice is he does’nt
like cats, so he is best homed without one.

We are really enjoying having him here as he really is no trouble at all

Bernard is a seven year old Jack Russel, good with children and dogs but not with cats.
He came from a family home (due to circumstances beyond their control they were reluctantly forced to give him up)

progress update: 10/11/11

Hello Helen
Just to let you know Misty has settled in really well and is now part of our family – she loves her walks and is getting more confident with each day.
She happily says hello to any dog she meets and loves evening play chasing her ball, though she hasn’t quite grasped the concept that she needs to drop the ball for it to be thrown again!
I’ve attached a couple of photos.

She was spayed 3 weeks ago and all has healed well.

Hi Helen,

Misty (named by my 3yr old who loves watch ‘Mist the Sheepdog’) has settled in nicely today.
My children (2 and 3 years) adore her and she is beautifully gentle and affectionate towards them.

She has made good friends with Bebe (my Boxer X) and behaved really well on our walk this afternoon.

She is a very cuddly girl and will instantly try and lie on your feet the moment you sit down!

Hi Helen,

When I met you at the Amberwood Dog Show, I said I’d send you photo(s) of Trixie, so here she is.
I’ve got another lovely more close-up one printed but I can’t find it on the computer.
Anyway she’s quite transformed nowadays from the terrified and so aggressive character she once was into an (almost) perfect friend.

Hi Helen
I’ve been quite excited this evening because, having a new computer, for the 1st time I was able to log onto your website.
And I actually found Trixie under Dogs Homed in Dec. 2008
There I noted you said, Photos to follow, which makes me rather ashamed because of course you never heard any more about her.   So I’ll update you now.
She was quoted as being 2 years old when I had her on 12th Dec. but actually in the documents I found her date of birth listed as 1st July, which made her barely 18 months then.
And she certainly was a problem child, terrified of everything and everybody and most of all other dogs.
Taking her for a walk was a nightmare as she was so frightened she would attack them.
Then when she could be gradually let off the lead there was the uphill task of getting her to come back when called.
About 18 months of almost daily traumas for us both.
But on her 3rd birthday she took a vow of obedience and devotion, and for the last year she has become a highly intelligent and much loved angel.
This has all been prompted by reading about the DAWG Fun Dog Show on 4th Sept. which I certainly hope to come to.
I reckon Trixie would certainly qualify to enter the class of “dogs who have come the furthest”, as well as one that’s “been most problematic”.
Between now and then I’m sure I ought to be able to send you some photos, though I’ll need some help in doing that.
Anyway I thought you’d like to hear about one of your rehoming success stories.

Trixie has gone to her new home today !!

Trixie is a two year old collie cross.

She was bought for a girl who lost interest in her!

She was then stuck in a run in field and left alone apart from when she was being fed.

She is very timid with new people and needs to become more socialised

with other dogs.

progress update on Paws 18/10/11

He really is a super little chap.
Loves cuddles (as you can see from the photo!) and being made a fuss of!
My 3yr old walks him without problem and he has been very well behaved with other dogs that we have met on our walks.
He is good with cats and hasn’t paid any attention at all to my chinchilla.
He is very laid back around the house.
He will make a wonderful addition to someone’s family!

progress update on Paws 15/10/11

Hi Helen,

Please find attached a couple of photo’s of Paws.
What a super little chap! I sent him for a shampoo and set upon arrival yesterday and he behaved impeccably at the groomer’s.

Paws loves nothing better than a cuddle and giving you an affectionate lick.
He has been very loving with the children; and is good with cats and other dogs.

He is very obedient and slept without a fuss throughout the night. He has been clean in the house.
