Paddy has gone to his new home today, he bounced around with glee as his family came to pick him up !!

Paddy is a year old, very sociable and playful.

He is good with dogs and children.

He was a stray and is very thin and is now being fattened up whilst staying with Tony and Jenny.

He seems to be a very loving dog and has obviously had some training,
we had a very quiet and clean night last night.

We think he will make someone a wonderful pet,
I also think if someone was looking for a dog to be trained for obedience tests he would be ideal.

We walked him off the lead this afternoon and he was very good.
He loves chasing a ball and can be persuaded to bring it back.
At home he gets bored and will bring a ball or a rope ring and drop it in your lap so you will play with him.

As to the future he will need to go to someone who can lavish attention on him and ideally get involved in one of the new dog sports e.g Agility, fly ball or disc dog.
From this you will gather that he is not a passive dog and will not be content just sitting around all day.

TAKODA has now been rehomed !

progress update from Sheryl: 6th Feb 09

When I first went to the Kennels to meet Takoda I was immediately in love with him!
He is a beautiful dog to look at and from what I can
see after our first meeting- I think he has the personality to match.
The girls looking after him at the kennels said they dont let him walk
off lead incase he legs it!
But after discussing with you Helen, I was happy to see how things went before deciding if I let him off or not.
Takoda came bounding over (with the kennel worker in tow!!) and was very pleased to see my me and my brother.
I wasnt sure what to expect when meeting him,
however as soon as I saw him I felt at ease as he bounced about ready to go! I think he knew why I’d arrived! He dragged me to the gate!
On the lead Takoda is VERY strong.
He can easily pull you wherever he wants to, but I can see he has had some training as he heeled a bit better when I took control. I found I had to use a stern voice and lots of lead correction to kind of get the result I wanted-
Me walking him (sort of!)-not the other way round. After Takoda
proved he could come back on the extendor lead using the command
“Come”(obviously treats helped!)
I allowed him to run free off lead- Probably for the first time in a while. What a sight!
Takoda ran at full pace through the forest-It was so lovely to see him having so much fun!
I made sure I kept calling him back every few minutes and
rewarding him with a small treat and he soon realised what was
expected of him.
After about 15 mins he wouldnt run off further than
about 20 metres-
If he got too far away he automatically stopped and waited for us. (What a relief!)
I think the game of hide and seek helped this,
as he turned around after running deep into the forest
and realised we werent there! We hid behind the trees and he came to find us and he was very pleased with himself when he did!
We really had a great time together. I took along a Ball launcher and tennis
ball- He couldnt wait to chase the ball- but the minute he got hold of
it- It was destroyed!
Literally in a matter of minutes-Takoda had chewed it to pieces!
We had to make do with launching pebbles and wood-
But he still chased it through the muddy water! We didnt come
across many people, but the ones we did see were older children on
bikes with their staffordshire terriors-
Takoda was very eager to say Hi and behaved himself, although I could see he was in a dominant state with his head held high and his tail straight up in the air.
He had a sniff (on lead) and then we moved on- Takoda behaved well but I had to keep a strong grip on his lead. We passed an older man in the woods and Takoda took a little convincing to follow us instead of him-
He ran off infront towards a builders yard- No panic though!
We just called him and ran the other way- Takoda followed!
Going back to the kennel was fine up to the the point of reaching the front gate
-At that point he wanted to keep walking, but then decided to try and pull me off my feet to get back in the front wooden gates! Luckily we got there on 4 paws and 2 feet!
Takoda is probably one of the most powerful dogs I have walked in a while, but I see lots of potential if his training is continued as he is very responsive to voice commands and treats as rewards.
I am really looking forward to seeing him to walk again on sunday.
He really enjoyed his time in the woods and it was a beautiful sight to see.

progress update: 29th Sep

Hi this is Takoda,
Well I have settled into my new home
I have also got to know my place which is at the bottom of the pack.
I have now been here for about 2 months and loving it, I have been up
the common running and made lots of new friends most of them will play
with me.
As for my training well I am doing quite well I sit and wait for my
dinners until i am asked to “take it” my mum has been really brave and
has put her hand into my dinners when eating and she tells me I am a
good boy, my dad on the other hand doesn’t quite trust me quite enough
to do this yet.
When out walking on my lead on the road I sit a the curb when asked
and wait until the word Heel comes then I know I can walk on.
Only part of training I am finding really difficult is to come back
when called even though mum and dad have treats on them I still preferto do my own thing especially on the common, I do sometimes come back
but not often. This I will get right one day!!!!!!!!!!
I now have a cage I go into when mum and dad aren’t around as I was
wrecking my new home and my mum was getting angry and kept telling me
off. I tend to go in my cage on my own as the door is left open when
mum and/or dad are home instead of my bed I fell happier in my cage.
Millie and I get on ok but she can get stroppy mind you she is nearly
12yrs old and I do push my luck most of the time with her, Frank well
we are much better together we rub noses with each other and Frank
will rub himself up against me. I do chase him in the garden though
which I shouldn’t be doing but he does tease me at times so I am only
getting my own back.
As from 1st October dogs are allowed back on the beach and I know I
will be going for walks there and I can also play with other dogs and
play in the see.
I do have some photos but mum and dad don’t know how to put them on
the computer but they will hopefully send some on when they know how.

progress update: 11th Aug

Hello Helen,
Hope you are ok. Update on Takoda,
Arrived safely at his new home after diverting off to see my sister and her Inuit.
Both dogs played really well together was good to see.
Have been onto the common for some long walks with Takoda and his dog
sister Millie, he found lots of puddles to play in some of which were really muddy great fun.
We have also taken him on the beach and he even went into the sea for
a very little swim only because a wave caught him that was so funny he loved it.
Takoda has settled in very well, have had a couple of naughty times with him however he was told off, think it is called knowing his boundaries.
Training is coming on too. I am doing recalls and he will come back to us
unless there is a distraction going on, he will also sit and wait for
his dinners which he does really well.
We have had to invest in a halti for him as he pulls me over and I find that it was hurting my
arm. Den does however take him out just on the lead and he is sort of
getting better.
Frank the cat is not sure of Takoda as all Takoda wants to do is play,
things will get better between them though.
Takoda has lots of hard toys to play with and likes to go out into the
garden to play with them. His favourite is a ball on a raggie as he
throws it up in the air and tries to catch it this is great fun to
watch.
Takoda has changed our lives he is fun to play with, very loving, and
a challenge at times.
Takoda has settled in very well.

It has been discovered that he is well-behaved towards guinea-fowl but is

Takoda’s first day at school.

Having arrived into the rescue my confusion soon turned to excitment when I saw new friends.

Jack and I played for hours I think I wore him out.

Helen said that I needed to run my energy off if the other dogs were going to be able to sleep tonight.

So off we went to the forest.

I have only been off the lead a couple of times in my life and at first I kept my distance just in case she put me back on the lead.

I met several walkers and their dogs and ran up with my tail wagging and had lots of fuss.

At one point I found a boggy ditch and now I am black and silver.

I was bored with my other colour anyway.

Dooley and Spike run really fast after balls,that is until Spike has chewed them all into little pieces, and I had a hard time keeping up with them.

After two hours we were all tired and it was starting to rain so we headed back to the car.

I showed Helen how well behaved I could be and returned when she called me,

I think she was quite relieved !

Everyone thinks I am gorgeous but I already knew that.

Takoda is a 15 month old Northern Inuit

He is very sociable and great with other dogs

He is also good with children and cats.

He has been attending classes and has successfully completed the first part of his kennel club obedience training.

He comes from a good home.

as yet Debbie is having problems getting her camera to work.

We will display photos as soon as possible !

I am 15 weeks old and a Lab cross German Shepherd.
Debbie who is fostering me thinks I am gorgeous and so does Bob her dog.
I already know how to sit,stay,come,wait,find and lie down this is because I have been to training classes.
I am clean as a whistle in the house whatever this means and ask to go out.
I have a mellow temperament and already come when I am called off the lead.
I will be looking for a home after the New Year as I have a present to open on Christmas day and I wouldn’t want to miss that.
I like children and I am sure I could like cats.

progress update on Sammy: 5th Jan 09

Sammy had a good first christmas with us.
he got lots of pressies: treats and toys, and loved all the wrapping paper.

he now comes back to us when called while being off the lead and sits
when asked.
he has 2 great new friends who he plays with often.
also, he has been castrated at 6 months which all went well.
overall, he is a lovely,gentle dog and we are happy that he is with our family.

progress update on Inky ( now known as Riley ) 20th Sep

Well, I think you could say that Riley has well and truly settled in
and made himself at home from day 1.  Everybody absolutely adores him
and he works it!

He likes our vet and our vet thinks he’s ‘cool’ – well he’s a Texan!?

What a character this dog is!  I think we could all see the potential
for that from when he was tiny and standing up for himself with all
his brothers don’t you?!  Oh, does this dog love life!  Indoors he
thinks he’s truly invinsible – you would not believe the things he
gets himself into and the things he gets up to.  He likes nothing
better than to terrorise my teenage sons when the mood takes him as
well.

Now, outside is a different matter!  He hasn’t conquered that one just
yet.  I think we’re trying to master the agoraphobic stage of
puppyhood.  Well there’s strange people, there’s cows, horses, huge
things with 4 wheels that travel very fast, wind and more often than
not . . . rain!  Although, I don’t think he minds getting wet so much
now because it makes him nice and stinky and that’s the way he likes
it – much better than that poofy coconut herbal shampoo!!!  Can’t be
doing with that!

I would just like to say a big THANK YOU to you and DAWG dogs and all
your helpers.  We have found a wonderful, gorgeous dog that has and
will continue to enrich our lives.

I always keep an eye on the DAWGdogs website and promise I will keep
in touch.  Keep up the good work.

Tinker has now been renamed Sammy by his new family who have sent in these great photos and the following update:

Sammy is settling in really well. He knows this is his home now.
He loves playing in the garden with all his toys.
He gets on really well with the children.
He is so gentle and friendly.
He mostly toilets in the garden now or if not on paper.
We are looking forward to taking him out for nice walks,which should
be in a couple of weeks.
His second immunisation is due next week.
He loves his nice comfy bed, as that is his safe area and no one
touches him when he is in it.
Thanks to everyone involved in his rescue, we couldn’t imagine being
without him.

This weekend’s update from Claire:

I put one of those rigid plastic under bed stores in the kitchen just to see if they would use it for a toilet.
Patch got the point of it straight away, what a good boy, top of the class!
The others alternate between using it as a toilet, a wrestling ring, a toy box, a bed and a go- cart (it has wheels and is never in one place for long).
It is also good for a chew, which spares my kitchen units!

I’ve discovered Tinker is the bully of the bunch and the cause of Inky’s loudest squeals, as he is dragged round the room by his tail.
I’ve had words with Tinker about being nice to his little bro’ but he didn’t make any promises and tried tugging my ponytail when I picked him up for a cuddle!.
I think Nougat has grown the most in the week since I last saw them.
He needed to so he can support his big belly!
He’s a lovely boy now and I think he’ll be a big handsome boy when he’s older.
We discussed it and he agrees.

The heat has made them restless this weekend and the bigger ones are sleeping less in the day.
Their play fights are quite fair so I let them get on with it.
I can tell straight away when Inky is involved because of his little bark.
Inky & Patch have nice play fights and Maggie is quite gentle most of the time if she joins in.
Nougat and Tinker are clearly trying to establish who’s boss.

Maggie has been less aggressive over the food.
She growls a little but she hasn’t put any of them on their backs this week.
She is very playful, bounding around with whatever toy she can get hold of and trying to get the others to join in by playing tag.
They aren’t impressed on the occasions when she is the only one awake and up for a game.

I’m definitely more exhausted this week than last, I thought it would be easier as I knew what I was letting myself in for but a week shows quite a change in Puppy’s life and they are growing up fast!

I wish them well in their new homes, especially Inky for whom being away from his brothers will probably be a welcome break!

progress update: 22nd July

I didn’t think I’d taken that many pictures as the pups don’t stop moving when they are awake.
Most of these were taken at nap time when they were safely snuggled up in the cage giving me a chance to mop the kitchen floor without dragging at least four of the puppies round with the mop…. A favourite game I discovered, that and stealing the wee soaked paper towels from me as I tried to clean up.

I have to admit my favourite was the little spotty pup (Inky I think Jan has named him)
I affectionately called him Runty or Titch during his stay and he didn’t seem to mind,
probably because I frequently defended him against the other four pups when their play fights got a bit rough.
He’s a lovely little chap who quite happily minds his own business until the others try and grab his tail/ear/leg (sometimes all at once).
He barks at them more than he bites back but he has been trying to defend himself. Bless him!

Maggie loves attention and being bigger than the others, she barges her way to the front to make sure she gets it!
She was only naughty at meal times when she would see off the others from BOTH bowls of food at once!
I excluded her on one occasion to make sure the others were getting their fair share.
She expressed her displeasure at my decision by complaining and doing a big poo in the bed! That’s me told!

Looking forward to seeing them again at the weekend!

progress update: 15th July

The new pups are tiny, only 6 weeks old apart from the black collie girl who is 8 weeks old.
All the Dalmation cross Collies are boys, thin and riddled with worms.
They were fed once a day instead of four times and as you can see the first meal didn’t last long.

They will not be ready for two weeks as they will need to fatten up,
get rid of the worms and have a vet check.

Jan is thinking of names for them but the black Collie is called Maggie.

Murphy’s dogblog

Hi, I went to my new home today, the big pack leaders came and carried
me off to my new home; my new brothers came to fetch me too.  I cried
in the big 4×4 on the way, I felt so sad to leave my foster mum who
has helped me so much, but I soon became distracted by the view out
the windows, it must be good because my new brothers kept a look out
all the time, but I just got tired and fell asleep.

We all walked through the door of my new home together and my new
brothers raced off to the garden to see if anything had happened
whilst they were gone (I think Patches needed a bathroom break too!)

Timmy my big brother is a grump at the moment because I took his fav
basket but Patches my new little brother, who’s very old and wise made
me feel better and told me he will get used to me, like I will get
used to him, we all take time to get used to living with some one new.

In my new home there is a big door and I have decided that my first
job will be to guard it from danger, by watching it all the time, plus
I think I might just want to go back to where I’m used to
living………things here are just different…….take the stairs, the ones
here are tricky and when I tried to race to keep up with my new
brothers I just fell down (ok so I cried a bit but I tried to be
brave) I am fine its just the shock of it all made me feel sad.

I had my first meal here I loved it, yummmmmm, maybe it’s not so bad
here after all.

I found the water earlier but managed to stand in it, I gave a very
embarrassed ears down look because Timmy laughed at me, maybe he’s not
that much of a grump……….

Well all this new stuff is just so tiring and
this rug is so soft that I just have to go to sleep…….. mmmmmm…………..

Oh the muddy footprints on the carpet they are mine…. guess who
found the mud in the garden……ops ………ok maybe I’m beginning
to like it here…..

She was homed a year ago but unfortunately her owners’ health is not so good now and she has been returned to the Rescue.

She is good off the lead, good with other dogs and with children.

she is currnetly being fostered with Murphy and his teaching him his puppy manners!

progress update: 28th Nov

Fen has gone to his new home today !!

I am only 6 months old and had spent several weeks wandering on my own.
I ran across the road and was hit by a car so when I was found my tail was quite mangled.
I know this because I heard people talking about the serious injury to my tail,
I went to sleep and when I woke up my tail had gone and so had the pain.
I stayed with a kind lady who looked after me and not long after I was picked up and taken onto a very big thing they call a ferry.
After a long car journey we arrived at a house and I was carried inside, where there was other dogs.
I was extremely frightened at first and hid but after a while a black and white collie who was very excited and looked a bit like me asked me what my name was.
I told him I didn’t know and he said I would be given a name soon and he was in charge.
His name was Dooley and there was another dog there called Rocco who just sort of smirked and said I’d better not play his cds.
I don’t know what a cd is so I don’t think I will.
Dooley has told me it is his job to teach me my dog manners and he has a couple of times today already!!
Though I didn’t think that I was doing anything wrong.
Dooley said “That’s just so you know and it’s for your own good no-one likes an unruly pip squeak.” He’s seems to be mellowing and has played with me since.
I heard Helen laughing and saying to someone that Dooley was sussing out which of the dogs he could get away this behaviour with.
She told him to behave and strangely enough he seemed to listen to her.
Dooley says she has a soft spot for him because she says he is crazy but she loves him anyway.
He seemed to like this and hopes that she will buy him a special star collar.
I don’t know what the special star collar is but I think Rocco might tell me once he has stopped smirking.
I’ve been told by the people at the rescue I’m very sociable and will make some family a nice companion but also I heard them say that this works both ways and that the family must also meet muster and make me a good family.
I need a bit of training but don’t know what training is but I am sure I will find out soon.
The food is not bad here and I was very hungry by Sunday, we didn’t get anything to eat when we arrived as Helen said our stomachs were upset from the long journey and she didnt want to overload our systems with food.
Today we had lots of food.
Helen had to stand in front of me to stop me from eating everyone else’s.
Well you know for a long time I had to beg for scraps so a chap gets into the habit of grabbing whatever is going free!

Fen is a  6 month old collie pup.

Found very emaciated with a mangled tail as a result of being hit by a car.

Vets were unable to save his tail which had to be amputated

He is good with everyone but will need training

Sammy has gone to stay with Jane who has promptly renamed her Hattie Jacques !

I arrived from Ireland on Saturday and realised straight away that my food rations may not be what they once were.
Having lived in a pub I have enjoyed lots and lots of tidbits and unfortunately this shows in
my waistline.
Helen said it showed in hers once too when she ate far too many Cream Eclairs but if I do like her and eat smaller portions and drop the habit of eating everything in sight I too will lose weight.
She said I will feel a lot better for it as every inch of fat on the outside is an inch of fat on the inside pressing down on my internal organs.
I am not sure that I am looking forward to this and on Wed I am going to stay with Jane who is very sensible with dog’s diets and walks a lot.
I enjoy a walk or two if it is a gentle stroll but I don’t think this is what Helen and Jane have in mind. Oh dear !!
I used to belong to an American couple who bought a pub in Ireland and then sold it.
They went back home and phoned the new owners to say they didn’t want me anymore.
I was very hurt by this as I had been a loving and faithful companion.
I heard mutterings from the humans that this wasn’t the first dog that they had done this to.
The people at the rescue told me not to take it to heart that some people are very
shallow that I am better off without them and that as I am such a nice
character I will soon find a home with people who will appreciate my
kind and gentle nature.
Dooley and Rocco have been very kind to me and when I was a bit upset when I first arrived they let me share their beds.
I had to make sure Fen didn’t gobble up my food, I’m not good at protecting food as it has in the past come fast and in great plenty but Helen stood in front of my bowl and wouldn’t let him have it so I was able to relax and eat it at my own pace.
Fen has gone to stay with Jackie and Bob so my food is safe.
As you can tell I think a lot about food and if you have been on a diet you will be able to sympathise
with me.
I had better go now as Dooley is about to tell me his Echo story again and even though I have heard this at least a dozen times I must look interested and try not to fall asleep!

She is very friendly and currently very overweight.

She belonged to an American couple who returned to America and left her behind.

She gets on very well with other dogs and is very friendly.

She will need a strict diet and more exercise!
