Morgan

progress update: 23rd Oct

Dear Helen

Morgan is nearly two years old now and has grown into a very beautiful dog, He is almost impeccably well behaved! With just the occasional lapses. When he first arrived he wouldn’t let us touch him – he snarled and went for us – especially me. He wouldn’t eat his food out of a bowl, but if I threw it out onto the lawn, he would gobble it .

He is a joy to take out for his walks, is ball mad and ignores all other distractions, other dogs and people most of the time. He does stop to say ‘hello’ but then gets back to the important business of chasing after his ball. He is eating well, has two walks every day – in Windsor Great Park where he is free to run and play and chase after his ball. There are lots of other dogs to socialise with too. Now, he is a loving and gentle dog, will come for a cuddle and apart from having the top of his head touched, which I understand is fairly general with a lot of dogs, he is happy to be handled.

Brian and I recently went to North Somerset and stayed in a delightful part of the country, very dog friendly. The attached photographs show Morgan having fun on the beach – then having a shampoo!

Our cat Dangermouse has finally become resigned that this noisy beast has come to stay! He often goes across the road for some peace and quiet but when he thinks no one is looking, they play together, and can sometimes be found sleeping together on Brian’s bed. After having had three Border Collies we thought we knew the breed. Morgan has shown us a new side – neither of our ‘girls’ played ball – Morgan is ball mad. We took him to flyball classes for a while, and he loved it, but he wouldn’t go and get the ball from a stranger – so we had to abandon that.

I hope all goes well with you and DAWGS and that you are going from strength to strength.
With very best wishes

Alysia, Brian and Morgan Hunt`

progress update: 30th March

“The change in Morgan over the last year has been dramatic. When we got him he would not let us handle him, he did not like to be touched or petted, he snarled and bit – but gradually, with lots of handling and cuddles he has transformed into such a beautiful happy dog.
One other quirky habit he had, was that he would not eat his dinner out of a bowl. He barked and squeaked, and sat there guarding it tenaciously, but would not eat it. If I finally threw it out down the garden ‘for Mr Fox’ – he would happily rush out and gobble it all up. He is quite the star of Windsor Great Park and everyone knows Morgan- so many people have come up to Brian, who gets taken for a two hour walk every morning, to say what a beautiful dog he is.
With very best wishes to you and many grateful thanks from all the dogs you have re-homed and saved – and from a pair of old fogies whose lives have been transformed by the coming of the lovely Morgan.
Love and best wishes
Alysia, Brian and Morgan.”

“Here’s the latest on Morgan, the Irish Diddycoy we got from you a while ago. He is in to garden designing, thinks he is Dairmuid Gavin, he rearranges the flower pots and sticks and plants and makes a messy camp on the lawn – what a mess! If I did it, there would have been a divorce many years ago, but he gets away with it ….

As you can see he has grown into a beautiful fellow.

Our Burmese cat Dangermouse was very upset when we brought home a Hearing Dog last summer and we did have grave doubts about bringing home Morgan. But there has not been a problem. We have always had Border Collies and DM got on very well with them, and this time when he saw the puppy, he decided he could train it, like he has trained us, and now they get on very well. The cat comes in and invites Morgan to play. This means I hide and when you find me, I can swipe your nose if it gets too close! It took some months before DM came back to being a family cat, he used to sit on a high shelf looking miserable, out of reach of the leaping, barking, full of energy beast we called our puppy. These days, Morgan has quietened down a bit, and DM has got used to him, knows that he won’t be attacked, only thwarted in the usual Border Collie way from going where he wants to go, but he is used to that and has his own way of dealing with it. He runs in one direction and when Morgan goes after him to head him back, he changes tack and heads off in another direction and usually gets away. Then he comes back for more.
He is such a mischief and full of life and love. He has just completed his 10 weeks of training, and as was once said by a teacher “ He is cheerfully indifferent to discipline”. He will sit – because he thinks it means a titbit, but he won’t ‘stay’ – no way. He has recently been castrated.
Brian had a heart attack and bypass late last year, and having Morgan to focus on and take for exercise has made the world of difference to him. Morgan has been the best thing since sliced bread as far as Brian is concerned! He takes him to training classes, (I’m not allowed to go) and also takes him for a long walk in the Great Park every morning. At first Morgan wouldn’t get into the car. He was fine one inside, but it has taken a long time to gain his confidence and get him to go voluntarily into the car. He would rush to his bed and lie on his back as if to say ‘ Oh, please NO, don’t make me go…’ Now, when he sees Brian putting on his jacket he is all bounce and ready for the off.

So that’s the story of Morgan Hunt, growing up nicely and doing very well.”

Sally, Mungo and Jack

progress update: 26th Aug

Thanks very much to Tamsin for this progress update!

I have some pics of Sally, Mungo and Jack here which are my dogs if you want them for your successful stories page.
In case you dont remember their story because it was 9 years ago, Sally and Mungo were rescued by you with their brothers and sisters and their mum.
They were found in a ditch starving to death. Their mum was a pure boxer and she got rehomed too. They are now 11 years old and still running around after a ball and jumping too.
Jack came and sat on my mums lap when we were at one of your charity dog shows
(Sally and Mungo were still puppies by then) He had gotten away from the person walking around asking people if they wanted to look after him etc.
And he had been weeing up peoples bags and stuff so we had to get him as he curled up in a ball on my mums lap.
You rescued him from Wales too he was found wondering the streets.
Anyway heres the pics Sally has one black eye, Jack is the jack russel and well you can guess Mungo – THE FAT ONE!

EDDIE WINS RESCUE DOG CATEGORY AT BEAMINSTER DOG SHOW !!

An update at last of Eddie….who is doing very well and is much admired.
I have been letting him off the lead for the past two weeks
and with the fresh cooked liver titbit treats, he comes back
well…from other dogs who he loves to play with, and from the cows
who he has been trying to make friends with but they do their best to
ignore him….
His speed staggers me when running. He is very
friendly both at home and out and is learning quickly when to leave
other dogs alone and return to me.
I am lucky to have a ridge and
fields falling away, close to home…
one photo shows Eddie up on the ridge with West Bay in the background.
Another photo shows him waiting until the command to ‘take it’ for his dinner….he’s great
with this.
But the best photos of all taken today were at the Beaminster dog show,
Eddie entered into the ‘Rescue Dog’ catagory and
chosen and presented with first prize by Martin Clunes…

He is proving a wonderful pet, and now enterering into the terrible
teen years and can be a bit wilful with retrieving and sometimes
chewing anything and everything he can get his paws/mouth on to….
I expected this and no bit deal if a tad frustrating at times…a few
things I’d have rather not had chewed but no matter we really are
getting there.
The cat and he are better and he wants to make friends
but she won’t allow it….
All in all I feel I am lucky to have Eddie
and he is much admired…

progress update: 9th July

Hi Helen, just a few photos taken during a brief spell when it wasn’t raining.
Eddie is a sweet thing and follows me around.
He loves a settee!! but obeys ‘down’.
As yet he does not obey ‘come’ but it’s early days and I look forward to being able to trust him off the lead.
He loves the garden and seems to know his way around inside and out.
My cat is living upstairs at the moment and though Eddie is keen to
meet her, he’s a bit too enthusiastic.
She has been very used to my long term other dog who died 5 years ago,
and accepted the brief period I had the Beardie recently with not a backward glance….but
Eddie she hisses and spits so we will need to take our time.
I think she will come to terms with him living here eventually and indeed
hopefully he will dutifully not chase her.
I am going along to a puppy dog class this week without Eddie,
to have a look with a view to starting next week.
I will keep you posted.

progress update: 5th July

Eddie has gone to a new home in Bridport today!

Bruce

Bruce came to us from Ireland where he had been living with a family
who didn’t have the time for his needs.
He had spent a lot of time tied up in the garden and as a result of this was not sociable with
other dogs.
He loved adults and children and his ball.
He fostered with Jane, one of our dedicated foster mums for three months.
Lots of people went to see him but as he was very strong they felt they wouldn’t be
able to cope with him.
Eventually he went to live with a couple who 12 years earlier had adopted a dog called Ben from us who had sadly died.
Bruce settled in the minute he went there as if he had lived with them all his life and has helped to get them ovet the loss of Ben.
He is very much loved.

Flo

“Here are some photos and an update of Flo, the blonde pup we adopted 3 weeks ago.

Flo is lovely and has settled in very well and is most definitely one of the family.

Although she was initially very timid and nervous of people she fell in love with our Goldie, Billy

and he has helped us to nurture Flo’s confidence so that she now loves a fuss
and settles each evening on the sofa with us or snuggles up to Billy.

She has started training classes, already does the sit, recalls most
of the time, and is getting to grips with leave and wait.

She absolutely loves her walks. She also loves to meet new doggie friends
and their human companions on walks.

She is a bundle of energy and we think she will love her holidays in the Lake District when she is older.

We love her very much and hope we can make her life fulfilling and fun.”

Best wishes

‘The Martins’
Helen, Andrew, Billy and Flo

Ps she is a real girlie and just loves shoes!!!!!

Fun Day Dog Show Fundraiser

Last year we all had a great day at our annual fundraising Fun Dog Show.
The weather was perfect, not too hot and remained dry all day.

We raised £2031.09 for the rescue, which was more than any of us expected
and as the funds were down to the last £110.00 in the bank and the bills were mounting up our prayers answered.

Once again Nigel, Pat, Kate, Mark and Anne held the dog show at their farm and rallied on the day to ensure it was a success: helping with the setting up, running the stalls, judging in the rings and helping to clear up at the end of the day.

Thank you!

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone else who also helped on the day.

We couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you to evryone who helped and brought their dogs for the displays.

The Friendly Dog Club very kindly came again and put on a fantastic display.
The Hampshire Harriers Flyball Team ran a fun agility ring for us.

Thanks also to the Newfoundland Water
Rescue and Canine Agility Centre

who did a heelwork to music display

Thanks also to Elaine of

Shaggy Dog Photos

for these images!

Our next show is on Sunday the 7th of September at

Amberwood Farm, Fairlight Lane, Tiptoe, Hants
Starting at 11.00 am until 4.00 pm.

Anyone wishing to have a stall or for more info please contact Helen on 01202 380467 or
Kate on 07990614091.

Later in the year we will have programme of the classes and displays on the website.

Lillie, Callie, Scooby and Raggle

These are the dogs that were with the rescue and live with the Kate and her family in the New Forest.

Every year the Fun Dog Show to raise money for the rescue is held at Pat and Nigel’s farm on the 1st Sunday in September.

Lilly was the first of our dogs to go to live with the family,

originally she was to be fostered until a home could be found but she managed to weedle her way into their hearts and has never left.

Lily has been a bit of a trial over the years stealing food from saucepans, her best was a bubbling casserole which she lifted off the hob in the saucepan, placed it on the floor and licked the pan clean.

Digging up Pat’s flower beds and refusing to carry out simple tasks at training classes.

Benson was the next dog that they adopted and he can be seen in the photos doing flyball.

Benson was a real character and accident prone,he was the first dog ever in training to eat the squeaky toy and after waiting to see if it emerged from the other end it was removed from his stomach by the vet.

Sadly last year Benson died after a battle against Cancer,

we all have fond memories of his eccentric ways.

Raggle was a timid collie that arrived into the rescue from Ireland.

Knowing Pat has a soft spot for collies it was only a couple of days before she was packing her suitcase and off to a new home in the forest.

Raggle has adjusted and is full of confidence and is a firm member of the house pack!

Barney

“This is Barney. A lovely Boxer cross (maybe the other half is Pointer), he was found as a stray in Ireland & brought over here by the Dorset Animal Workers Group to save him from being put down. When I went to see him in his foster home he was quiet & affectionate, with the most adorable face. He played well with the other dogs & looked like he had the potential to get on with my 15 year old cat. I had my home visit that very same day & was approved. HURRAH !!

Two days later I set off to pick him up. Having watched many episodes of The Dog Whisperer on Sky 3 I was hoping to be able to take him for a long walk before taking him into the house, so he had ‘migrated’ & would know this was going to be his new home.

Best laid plans though…. It turned out Barney didn’t want to go outside & was extremely scared of getting in a car. So we ended up having a 2 minute walk to the end of the road & back, before I took him in his new house.
It took about a week of 2 walks a day before he would go to the front door under his own steam. Now it’s all wags & where’s my lead. The car is a different story, he is still petrified.

The cat has gone from being mildly interested, to distant, to indifferent to the new arrival. Barney, however, is still fascinated by the cat & needs a great deal of supervision when they are together.

I have contacted a local dog whisperer to come out & see if she can help with the car & the cat, so fingers crossed we can soon pop in the car for a nice walk on the beach without a second thought, as he loves it when there.
All in all he is a lovely dog & he is getting more settled everyday & I am sure we will soon be one happy band of human, dog & cat.

I’ll keep you posted.”
